Surin Beach

Naturally beautiful Surin is known as 'Millionaire's Row' due the the top-end celebrity haunts Amanpuri, Twinpalms and The Chedi amongst the luxury resorts there, as well as the US$ 1 million+ houses that sit proudly on top of the hills overlooking the Andaman Sea.

Although popular with tourists it's not a busy resort town, more like a coastal village. Fine white sand and turquoise water has ensured that the picturesque beach is very popular with tourists and Thais alike. The whole area is awash with high-end hotels and housing which in turn has created opportunities for high-end restaurants and wine bars. .

Bangtao Beach

Bangtao is a study in contrasts, with the luxurious resorts stretch of beach just a few minutes' away from the town of Cherng Talay, where many villagers still make their living as their ancestors did - by fishing, farming and rubber tapping. The northern tip of the beach, so far untouched by development, is still an area where visitors might find that they have the beach to themselves.

At 6km (4 miles) in length Bang Tao beach is one of Phuket's longest beaches and for the most part it's pretty deserted. Between the hotels that are fairly well spaced out you're unlikely to see anyone. Possibly due to the fact that there's no 'Beach Road', this beach is used almost exclusively by guests of the hotels here. From November to April the sea is flat, calm and clear.

From May to October there small waves but on occasion large waves make swimming dangerous, take note of the red flags when they're flying. If you hadn't guessed by now, the atmosphere is positively sleepy, this is a perfect place to come to leave everything behind and do nothing more taxing than read a book.
